The Midst of It All…
Ever heard someone say the phrase "In the midst of it all”
It’s just a common idiom that means being right in the middle of a situation, event, activity, or emotional experience as it is happening, or in “real time”. I’ve heard some use the term “surreal” too. Surreal describes a situation, experience, or piece of art that feels bizarre, dreamlike, or unreal, as if it belongs in a dream rather than waking reality. But for Sunday’s sake it’s the former we’re all accustomed to hearing and experiencing. Instead of looking at something from a distance or after it has already finished, being "in the midst of it all" puts you right at the heart of the action. In the spiritual, faith, motivational or emotional context, it often refers to experiencing God's presence, peace, or strength right in the middle of life's chaos, trials, or busy seasons (e.g., "Finding peace even in the midst of it all"). In short, it simply means right in the thick of things.
No One Gets a Pass
I can’t begin to write about the many, many, times I’ve found myself there, or what I humorously call “the thick of it”. As a Believer and follower of Christ’ works and words, I’d hoped the Lord would let me bypass a few things in life; financial struggles, a health crisis, loss and grief, even struggles with my faith. But no. I’d learn that in this life no one gets a pass on the obstacles that determine who and what we are to become. Now imagine going through all those life struggles without the knowledge, comfort, or protection of God. For me (and those in faith) life would be unbearable, unrelenting, unmanageable. My life would be an emotional, chaotic, head-spinning mess. Instead of breaking us, though, those trials refine us. They teach us patience in the waiting rooms of life, compassion for others fighting silent battles, and a deeper reliance on a strength far greater than our own. And that is precisely why we are here: through Christ, my own life experiences and faith are what constantly encourage me to share my thoughts, my heart, and my prayers with you each month.
Anchored in the Storm
Scripture reminds us that we live in a world full of trouble, but we are also given a profound promise of peace. When the waves are crashing around us, the anchor isn’t the absence of a storm—it’s the presence of the Savior right there in the boat with us.
He Doesn't Promise Absence: God never promised that we wouldn't face fiery trials, steep mountains, or valley seasons. Life's storms come for everyone, regardless of their faith.
He Promises Presence: His divine promise is that when you pass through the waters, He will be with you (Isaiah 43:2). He doesn't stand safely on the shore shouting instructions; He gets right into the boat with us.
Think about the disciples in the middle of the raging sea. They were terrified, feeling completely overwhelmed by the wind and waves, yet Jesus was right there with them, ready to speak peace to the chaos.
So, the next time you find yourself standing right in the middle of the whirlwind, in your storm, in the midst of it all, take a deep breath. Look around not with panic, but with expectation. You aren't forgotten, and you certainly aren't alone. You are just right where His grace can meet you most vividly, turning our heaviest trials into testimonies of His unfailing love.
